McLeod Rail’s internship success; a student interview with Chris Xu
What were you doing before you joined the Navitas Professional's program
Before joining the Navitas Professional Year Program (PYP), my everyday routine was browsing job search websites and sending out my resume, with no hope of getting any response. The motivation of doing this is I strongly believed in myself and that I would get employed at some point. However, I did not actually have a clear direction or clue on what might lead me to an engineering position.
Why did you choose Navitas PYP?
Navitas PYP provides exactly want I wanted - an opportunity to get into a company and demonstrate my capabilities. Equally important, Navitas also provides professional training which prepared me for the competitive job market and working environment. It guided me through not only the basic Australian workplace culture, but also some important practical workplace skills, such as email writing and public speaking.
Tell us about your internship, what was the experience like?
The internship experience with McLeod Rail has been remarkable. It has been very hands on and I needed to hit the ground running and contribute to projects. This had allowed me to learn and develop a lot faster. I had received great support from the managing director, estimator and administration staff throughout my internship. The whole team at McLeod have made my internship valuable and unforgettable.
What is the most valuable thing you have learnt from your internship?
Whilst every aspect of my internship is very valuable, I think the most valuable thing I have learnt is that I can contribute to large projects and be more effective working in a team. I used to think that there's nothing I can't do by myself and I can just do the task perfectly. The experience with McLeod Rail shows me that team effort is always stronger than individual capability. I can always achieve something greater with the support of my team. Therefore, I think teamwork is going to be the most important factor in my career.
What advice would you give a student who was thinking about enrolling in the Navitas PYP?
I understand that a lot of international students can see the PYP as a short cut directly into employment. However, this is not always the case. I have to say that no matter what company you complete your internship with, and whether you gain employment with the host company or not, at the end, students should always demonstrate their absolute best and treat it as a precious opportunity to develop practical skills, network and build your confidence in the workplace.
